Yahooo Spring! I think you all know I’m not a winter gal… I love warm weather, my garden AND all my flower friends coming back to play!

It’s that time of year again when I can hear my Mom forewarning us kids that this upcoming weekend was going to be Spring Cleaning for our home and everyone living in it. It was not an RSVP kinda event…We were her laborers for the weekend.

I remember dreading the weekend but then being surprised at how good I felt in our home after we had put

down some hard efforts to shed the winter stagnation. Here are some tasks that we did to our house every Spring:

1. Washed all the windows inside and out, along with washing the screens with soapy water, a brush, and a hose to rinse.

2. Washed all the blinds and window treatments in whatever fashion best suited, dry cleaners, W/D, or vacuum.

3. Flipped all of our mattresses over, as well as head to toe. Washed the mattress pads in the laundry. Vacuumed the side of the mattress we were about to put fresh sheets on. Nothing made my Mom as happy as fresh sheets and I think I inherited that affliction. 🙂

4. Did high dusting of all the ceilings, corners, and ceiling fans.

5. Ceiling fans got wiped down, and the blades were set to rotate counterclockwise.

6. Moved all the furniture and vacuumed underneath and also the washed baseboards that were now exposed.

7. My brothers were tasked with moving the refrigerator out so my Mom could vacuum the coils in the back. I was tasked with clearing everything out of the fridge and giving it a DEEP CLEAN. I washed all the shelves and bins in a hot soapy bath in the bathroom.

8. My brothers also had the not-so-fun job of cleaning the gutters of all the maple leaves from our trees. They loved getting on the ladder but hated digging out the leaves.

9. In the laundry room, we threw out any solo socks that lost their match throughout the year, and also cleaned the washing machine with vinegar to remove any funky odors in there.

10. Mom opened all the windows in the house and cleaned the oven with the Self Cleaning mechanism. It took hours but the oven came out looking brand new every year.

11. My Mom LOVED tidy and one of the big deals on this weekend was that any and ALL piles around the house got picked up and thrown into a laundry basket, it didn’t matter what it was, it was getting thrown if it was a pile where a pile should not live. Needless to say, we all picked up our stuff before Mom got that basket out.

It was all a bunch of work and I understand that these days kids are rarely the labor. Yet, teaching them what it can be like to have a sense of satisfaction in relation to their efforts, as well as learning how to deep clean their own homes when they are adulting is a wonderful gift they won’t appreciate until many decades later. I can attest to that one… 🙂

I also wanted to let you know that I’ll be doing a talk on May 16th over at
